House of Chen in Alpharetta

I have been ordering pick-up from here when in a clinch for a few years. Had to rethink what I was doing as I ordered seafood soup once again tonight. Sad. About 4-5 shrimp that bordered "tiny".  I would gauge that the crustaceans were sized at 50-60 to a pound. Combined with 4 pieces of imitation crab and a meager bit of chopped vegetables made the dish fairly pathetic.  Broth = what appears as water with a small hit of cornstarch. No taste. Had to add a lot of soy sauce; my own.   That this is billed as a soup dish for 2 people is actually funny. Paired it with a side order of brown rice just to fill up. This same outcome has now happened to me consistently 4-5 times over the past 12 months. Every time. Never brought the soup back as it wasn't worth getting back on the road. Was alway hopeful that it was some kitchen mistake or some new stingy cook - but never had any better frame of expectation from this place. Maybe they do better when sweet & sour or hot sauce brings things to a more interesting conclusion. I seriously doubt it. Finally, the customer interaction at pick-up is, unfortunately as unfriendly as the bad food. I'm through with this place.  I did give them 1 star, however - for being open 7 days. Availability during a famine gets some credit.

This is solid, tasty Chinese cuisine that even delivers without an "up" charge. They are long time citizens of the local community that put out good quality food. All of the perennial favorites are well prepared. Looking for an exceptional local Chinese spot? You won't go wrong with House of Chen.
