MAD in Houston

Enjoyed a lovely meal at MAD. Expecting just the usual tapas and it was so much more than that. The cocktails all looked amazing but I only tried one- vida verde which was so light and refreshing. Started with the liquid olives which I have never seen before. We also had the Gulas which was baby eels on potato chips with a quail egg. That easily was my favorite dish of the night. The presentation for the oysters was great and it tasted very fresh. I enjoyed the foie gras cone but we ate it before remembering to take a picture. For the larger dishes to share, we had the shrimp paella, Iberico pork and American Waygu steak. The steak was undercooked for my liking and a little tough. For dessert, I forget what it was called but it was amazing with white chocolate and passion fruit...

We had heard fantastic things about MAD, and so we booked it for a birthday celebration. We were not disappointed. The decor is amazing. We had several staff wish me happy birthday, which I always think is a nice touch. Our server was very patient in explaining the menu and as we made our choices and in making recommendations about how much food to get and which items were popular. And the servers that brought our food always explained what we were getting in detail, which is especially nice after you have ordered 6 or 7 things and it's hard to remember what they were! I had looked over some yelp reviews before coming and kind of came to the conclusion that I didn't need to worry about what I ordered; everything would be delicious. And that's pretty much how I felt about our food. There was no one "must get" item because it was all so good. If pressed, I would say my favorite thing was probably the bocadillo de calamares because it was so unique (squid ink potato bun with calamari inside), but it was all so good. The food was absolutely delish but my server was an asshole. I understand the restaurant environment, I use to be a hostess, I've seen the way servers discriminate customers on who looks like a good tipper. Anyways I guess my friends and I didn't look like a good tippers that unfortunately we were treated poorly and over looked. Good food though!
