MFA Cafe in Houston

I often have good experiences at museum cafes and this was no exception. Still somewhat full from my breakfast at Empire Cafe, I wasn't that hungry but needed a break from the enormous new contemporary art wing. A margherita focaccia seemed like the perfect option - and it was. It arrived with a spot of creamy cheese and colorful roasted tomatoes. Soft and warm, it was perfectly paired with a San Pellegrino Limonata soft drink. It's the kind of thing I'd eat on most days if it was available to me.

Exceptional Menu with something for everyone. Healthy and vegetarian options, as well as some wonderful Sweets.

We came in for a late lunch around 2 pm on a Sunday and it was pretty blah compared to other visits (when the MFA Cafe was a Cafe Express).  The place was busy so we did not think much of it when it seemed to take quite a while for our food (grill cheese and BLT).   But it didn't come and didn't come.  Not sure what happened, but our order had been completely lost or disregarded.  They apparently did not have an easy to find record of our order since they brought out the wrong soup.    They still take a page from Cafe Express by not toasting the bread for the BLT, which would have been okay had the bread been fresh but it seemed like it had been sitting on the counter for the whole hour we waited.  The grilled cheese was toasted, not grilled, and had very little cheese and was also served stale at room temp.  And the bread was not sourdough like the menu promised.   If the staff had offered an apology or explanation for forgetting our order, I like the think that would have been sufficient... however, they just would not say anything when I asked what happened.   I really hate being treated like cattle and that is what the staff at MFA Cafe dif with us.  So Mooo to you.   Avoid the grill cheese.   If the food is taking awhile, go ask about it instead of trusting that they know what they are doing.  And please bring back Cafe Express!
