It's a (chicken) jungle out there! Out there being near the Asheville Regional Airport on Airport Road across from a McDonald's. Chicken being a new outpost of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, the fried chicken chain founded by Al Copeland, a New Orleans-born high school dropout. After buying Church's Chicken in the late 1980s, creating a fast-food behemoth, Copeland lost his chain, mired in debt, in a bankruptcy. Now a part of Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International, Popeyes has about 3,100 units around the globe. When we lived in New Orleans, Popeyes was everywhere. We'd have it once or twice a month. I used to interview Copeland for a couple of newspapers I edited. He was a good interview, always with a colorful quote or two and with big, big plans for new ventures, most of which never worked out. Riding the popularity of the chain's fried chicken sandwich, the new location in Fletcher (or is it Arden?) has created quite a stir here. The drive-up lines stretched way out of the restaurant lot...
