I spent 10 days in Uzbekistan a few years ago, and I've been craving some real Uzbek food ever since. Imagine my surprise when I found out that there's actually an Uzbek restaurant in the Twin Cities! I ordered a sampling of food from their super convenient website (carrot salad, tomato salad, plov, manti, and of course, traditional Uzbek bread). The food was fairly good...maybe not quite as good as the Plov Center in Tashkent, but it definitely brought me back to my travels! The salads were both tasty, the manti was good, and the plov was maybe a bit small (for a large size) but also tasted good (although the meat was a bit dry). There used to be a restaurant here that was not very good many years ago. I've been 3 times since Samarkand opened and every time I go I have more and more good things to say.Let me just tell you, this is the cuisine I grew up on in Siberian/Central Asian region. I've gotten something different from the menu every time and the result has been a trip down memory lane each time. Everything has been clearly made from scratch. The meat in the Plov was fall-apart tender, so was the borsch. I loved that sour aftertaste that the sour cream adds to the borsch, I was impressed because it tasted just like grandma used to make! Everything tasted authentic, even the honey cake desert. It also feels like the kitchen is getting better each time. Hope to see this restaurant in business here for a long time.

I was looking forward to the opening of Samarkand restaurant in Plymouth. Also, there was very good reason - the birthday of my son and daughter-in-law.  I booked a table for four one month in advance, the owner told me that any time was possible on this day.  2 weeks in to the event, they called me and offered to transfer the order to another day, because on my reservation day they had a more profitable customer.  I refused to do this and they canceled my reservation. In my 30 years in America, I have never heard that this is even possible.  It feels like the owners of Samarkand never parted with the Soviet style of the service sector.  I will be surprised that Samarkand will stay in business for a long time, they have already lost four customers forever and this is only the beginning.Lidia S.
