I had a gumbo craving and came upon Verna Mae's in my search. There are so many "Cajun/Creole" and seafood restaurants that include gumbo on the menu, but their offerings fall short on taste, quality and authenticity. I had the chicken & sausage with file` gumbo. Outstanding. Amazing. Deeply colored, richly flavored roux, slightly vinegary, with a perfect quantity of shredded chicken and beautifully-flavored sausage that wasn't overpowering. I am still saying "Wow" every time I think about it. Paired with the gumbo was a small muffaletta sandwich; the bread had a delicate, crunchy and flavorful crust, and the sandwich was served warm with melty cheese and olive dressing. We are going back soon!

The best fried catfish I've ever eaten! Loved that all the employees are originally from Louisiana. Highly recommend the gumbo, catfish, shrimp and potato salad.
