Service was okay, food not so much.

I was grateful for Monica's being open. The food and service was great. Friendly staff. I've eaten there a few times and it's consistently good.

I've never been to New Mexico but the food at Monica's El Portal Restaurant is exactly what I envisioned the cuisine to be. Exactly. The best red chile sauce we had while visiting. The best sopapillas we had. The food here was at the top of our best restaurant experiences. It's a mom and pop type of joint and could easily be missed, but thanks to Yelp connections, it wasn't missed by this tourist. If you're visiting or from ABQ, I definitely suggest you put this on your must visit restaurant if you want to taste quintessential New Mexican eats. Nothing fancy and not some trendy take on the cuisine, but just damn good food someone's grandmother surely once made. Yum!
